"It's Time to Encourage!"

6/11/2015

To ALL our BBU Life Changers and Eagles,

Let's start off with a few questions for you :)...

When is the last time you encouraged someone? When is the last time someone encouraged you? Does life get hard for you sometime? Have you seen any of your friends or family members cry recently? Have you at any point ever just wished someone would have checked on you to make sure you were ok? When is the last time you encouraged yourself?

I ask you these questions to challenge you. It is so easy to go through our day to day duties or just our daily walk of life and not think of someone else. It is also easy to focus on our problems and forget that there are other people who are hurting and going through hard times as well.

Imagine if each of us took time to encourage and bring a smile to 5-10 people a day. After a 7 day week, that is a lot of people who were impacted in a positive way. Think about when you have been sad, wanted to give up, didn't understand why your life was going the way it was, or even you questioned if you mattered at all. Think about those emotions and think about how you would of felt if someone just took a moment to just encourage you, tell you how awesome you are and speak life into, whether that is through:  text, a call, physically meet up with you, stop to talk and possibly pray for you. How would that make you feel? For most of us it would probably turn our whole day around and make us feel so much better. Even if it is a temporary feeling, we would have enough hope to continue on and keep going.

Then take that same concept and think about if you looked in the mirror or wrote in your journal encouraging words about yourself. If you just spoke positive things about yourself or remember all the accomplishments you have earned and worked hard for. Sometime we cant always wait for someone else to encourage us, we have to encourage ourselves and know that we are going to be ok. We have to learn to be proud of ourselves even when no one around us may say it. When we learn to love, appreciate, encourage and celebrate our success and wins in our own life; then we can begin to care less if others say it or not. At that point we know who we are and what we are capable of!

Key Points:
*Take time to encourage those around you
*Encourage yourself
*Change your perspective towards life and people
*Have a positive mental toughness
*Don't forget to laugh, smile and enjoy life!

Final Thought: You never know what your words and/or actions can do for someone else. Don't doubt the power of your words or your actions. You will be surprised when you learn to take the focus off yourself and think of others, how impactful you can be. You matter and this world needs positive people who care about seeing other people make it and to do life with them. So let's step out and encourage others Life Changers and Eagles. Be a light out in the world and continue to make positive impact and change the world one life at a time!

"Humility and Thankfulness"

Family Post from Coach Bry

These past few weeks have literally been the most humbling weeks I have had outside of my missionary trips and random experiences in life. The reason why I say this is because I have been taking care of my mom as she battles this cancer journey and these last few weeks have been emotional for me.

A few weeks ago, my mom fell as she was going to the bathroom one morning and to hear her scream for help because she was unable to get up on her own and being in pain. Seeing her struggle to get off the floor and me having to use all my strength to help her up really showed me a lot. One thing I do know is I am thankful I was home when it happened because who knows what would of happened to her if I wasn't. That was one moment for me where it showed me how important it is that I am there for my mom whenever and however I can be. I was very scared and sad seeing her on the floor and her being challenged to get up.

Another moment that happened a few days after that is when she asked me to give her a bath. She mentioned to me that she hadn't been able to physically take a bath in 4 years (she only been taking showers the past few years) and that she would just really like to get in and enjoy it. I told her I didn't mind helping her get in and help get her situated. Little did I know, offering to help my mom do something that she has been wanting to do for a long time would turn into such a humbling and appreciative moment for me.

The process to get her in and out almost put me in tears. Having to be strategic and gentle to get her in because her legs were hurting so much and she is not able to use them fully because of the lack of strength in them. To see her just be so happy to be in the tub and have bubbles and all that, made me happy for her. I saw her get so frustrated though when we had to get her out. To see her not be able to use her legs or arm strength to get out and for me to have physically pull her out myself; I was like wow. I just thanked God for me being healthy one to help my mom in that moment, but also just thankful for being able to do all I am able to do. Seeing my mom in that process broke my heart literally because I know that was not easy and was beyond frustrating to have your mind want to do something your body physically just can't do.

I share these experiences because it really puts things in perspective. As people I believe we have the tendency to take things for granted, especially the small things. Like being able to eat, breathe, walk, run, talk, see, hear, and just live. When we really think about it and ask ourselves, what would we do if everything was taken from us? If we weren't able to use our legs, arms, be able to cook on our own or even have energy just to get up everyday. This is something I have observed not only with my mom, but also with my grandma.

To see what I consider very strong independent woman, all of a sudden have their basic needs of life slowly being stripped from them really began to break my heart. It made me want to pray more for my mom just for strength, peace, healing, restoration, and a will to keep going. We could always say what we think we would do in a situation until we get in it. I honestly don't know how I would handle it if I was in the journey my mom is in. I also believe that God knows who and what to give what to. There are people who can handle the cancer battle, the financial set backs, the family issues, and so on. It goes back to we will never get more than we can bare on us and that is something I am seeing with my mom. She may get tired, but she never gives up.

Key Takeaway: Again, I share this because I want us to learn to be grateful for all we do have. We may not have all we want or be living the life we desire right now, but we have so many things to be thankful for. Let us not wait until it is taken from us or not able to use it anymore before we appreciate what we have. Always remember that life may not always be an easy process, but if we change our attitude, mentality and effort; our lives will begin to change.

Today lets be thankful for another day of life and never give up. What we deal with is only temporary, it wont last forever. Appreciate the little things and be thankful for all and any blessings that come our way. It is always easy to focus on the negatives, but in the mist of those negatives; there are always some positives to appreciate it in the long run!

Thank you for reading Life Changers, hope this encourages you today!

"Never Give Up"

What’s going on Life Changers and Eagles.  Hope you are all doing well. I know it has been a minute since we have written a blog for you all. One topic we wanted to share with you is the idea of never giving up.

How many of you have been in a moment or in a place right now in your life where you just wanted to give up? Or you played a sport you thought you weren’t good enough or it got to hard and you wanted to quit? Well we want to encourage you today, that giving up or quitting is not an option!

You are all capable of greatness. Just because something becomes a challenge for you doesn’t mean you can’t do it and overcome it. Just means you may have to put a little more work in and be more disciplined to accomplish your goals. When things come easy you can’t learn from it, but when you are challenged, it builds: character, strength and determination.

Know that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. If you want it bad enough, you will fight for it. The things you are passionate about, you will go above and beyond to do. There will be people who will try and stand in the way, discourage you, distract you and get you off course, but you must let those people motivate you to reach where you want to go and not hold you back. There will be moments when life gets hard and tries to break you, but change your mentality to become mentally tougher and let those rough times, become your strength.

You are the only person that can keep you from accomplishing all that you want to succeed in. As long as we change our perspective, become mentally tough, have a plan on how to accomplish our goals, be consistent and stay determined no matter what comes your way; you will accomplish everything that is in your heart that you want to do.

Final thought; always remember that whatever you want to do let it be for the positive. Never think your dreams are too big. If they are big, that means you need others to come along side you and help you accomplish it, so don’t struggle alone if you don’t have to. Everything you set out to do, give a 100% and give your very best. Lead by example by making right choices. Always know that someone is always watching you, so show them the right way to go. Continue to be Life Changers and Game Changers, that impact and change the world. Keep going and never give up, you can do it and always remember; YOU MATTER!

Matthew Garcia presents Coach Bry's New Blog- "Leadership Lived Out"

To know who I am is to know the people I surround myself with. Over the course of growing and looking forward, I will be introducing people that I vibe with and believe they have great insight to share. Through them you will see much of the character and values that shape me.

Bryana Williams is one person I would love to share with you today. She is a leader in her own right and leads truly from her heart. Working with youth and young adults as a coach and mentor, I asked her to share some leadership principles she has studied, developed and put into practice. I hope you enjoy her wisdom as much as I have.

Talk soon & God bless,
- @IAmMGarcia

"Leadership Lived Out"

Leader - A  guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement or political group (Dictionary.com).

Leadership - The position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group (Dictionary.com).
Let’s take a moment to think about who follows us and who do we follow? These are questions to be asked if we are in a leadership role or if we have someone that leads us in our life. Being a leader we must know someone is always watching. Let’s make sure people are seeing the change, transparency and reality of our life. Leadership is not about the words, it is about the actions of our everyday life. We should be acting and doing things in our life that encourages, inspires, and empowers others to want to follow us and at the end of the day become better themselves. Having people watch and follow us, should force us as leaders to always live a life of accountability. We should always be checking our actions and words before we do act and do.

Being a leader is not easy, but we are all capable of being a great impact and a great leaders. Here are some applicable ways for us to be effective leaders:

  • Lead others as you would want someone to lead you. Be loyal, honest, trustworthy and consistent. Always want to see others grow and get better.

  • Become a reader and researcher. Knowledge is power. The more you know and more you learn, the more wisdom you can share with others.

  • Lead others with patience. Realizing that everyone has their own process and it may take others longer to get some things and to learn from their mistakes. Just keep loving and helping them through it all.

  • Lead by example and stay teachable. Be the person you want to teach others to become.

 B Better U

At Simpson University, all students are required to do a certain amount of service hours before they can graduate. The school turned this service into a class format to help students fulfill their duties. This class is called Ministry Practicum.

I decided to do my Ministry Practicum through an organization called
B Better U. This organization was started by Simpson University's Women's Assistant Basketball Coach, Bryana Williams. B Better U is "...a development mentoring organization that offers various programs and resources to children, youth and young adults. We are here to motivate, encourage and walk through life with every single one of our "Life Changers" who comes into our organization. We build a family type, safe and positive atmosphere, so that everyone feels welcomed and knows that we are not here temporarily in their life, but for a lifetime!" (Quote taken from B Better U's site).

I will be helping B Better U by possibly being a mentor, tutoring, coaching, working with service projects in the community, helping with after school programs, or a variety of other things. I see this as not just a thing I need to do to graduate but I see it as an opportunity to better myself, better the community, better other people, show God's love, and share my faith through works.

If you would like to know more about B Better U then please visit their site at http://www.startbetter.org or

The Heart of B Better U

9/21/2013

Hey B Better U Life Changers,

Welcome to the first official blog for B Better U. I wanted to take the time to really break down where B Better U started to where it is now. This still won't even give you the full picture, but it should give you a better understanding of where this awesome ministry has come from and where it is going. One thing I can say is that this may be a business to many, but to me it is a ministry. Let me share with you why!

B Better U fell on my heart back in 2010. It began as "BBU Sports" where I worked with local basketball players and did skill development training with them. It gave me a chance to mentor them while coach them. Not only to be a better basketball players, but better people. We used their gifts to bring them in, but then we would talk about life, help them make major choices for life, help them register for college, spend time with their family, go to their games and be able to share the Gospel with them when openings allowed us to. We started every workout in prayer and made sure during all workouts we encourage, teach, support, and correct.

As I continued to pray for "BBU Sports", God began to show me a greater and bigger vision for it. I simply began to just pray more, listen and write. Then once He showed me how it would look and be, the first thing I said was God, "how am I suppose to do this"? I was very nervous because I knew this wasn't a vision created by me, it was God's vision, so by no means necessary did I want to mess it up. Then many moments in the process of building I felt inadequate and unworthy to be able to run such an amazing vision because I knew I would be a leader over others lives. I don't take any work for God lightly, but knowing that I was responsible for others lives because of the way He would use me was huge. I knew I had to make sure my walk was strengthening through the Word, prayer, worship and fasting and that I got under mentors and other leaders to keep hold me accountable and check in with me.  As it was being more and more unraveled, I began to realize God chose me for a reason to do this, so I took began to just believe and trust in Him that He would provide and my confidence to do this came from Him. Where I wasn't qualified He made me qualified!

After 2 1/2 years, B Better U went from "BBU Sports" to "B Better U" organization and was officially launched in January 2013. We now have various programs and resources that we offer. I can honestly saying birthing this vision from the ground up has been a very time consuming and challenging process, but I have loved every moment of it. It has stretched me in various ways and has allowed my faith to grow like no other. My dependency on God is a must because doing this ministry full time has been fully operated with Him and by Him. I wake up daily asking Him what He would like to me to do and to order my every step, from meetings, to what people I should meet and work with, to paperwork, even to being on the field working.

I wake up daily excited to push this ministry business further and seeing God move in it. I love seeing the different lives being impacted by it and the relationships I am building because of it. Not a day that goes by that I regret being obedient to God and allowing Him to develop this. I am grateful and humbled to be the servant and the "YES" vessel to operate and lead B Better U. As much as I am used to help make others better, I catch myself getting better daily! I love B Better U; it is my heart because it is Gods heart. As I draw nearer to God, I am able to be re-filled to pour out to others. B Better U is me and I am B Better U!

Thank you for taking time to read this and seeing just a glimpse of my heart and the heart of BBU. I am praying for you all and I look forward to working with more of you Life Changers. Go out and make an impact in this world today. It needs you and you all have a purpose. Find what God has called you to do and step out in faith to do it. Know that You Matter and always remember "Ur Best U, Starts With Ur Better U"!!!

Much Love,

Bry Williams
